STW, taught by Dr. Crowthers, is related to the STEM course since we learn how to write scientific papers in this class. The skills learned in this class are then used in our STEM 1 projects. STW is very important because it teaches us essential methods to share our work with everyone, without which all of our work would have no meaning. After all, no one would know what the project is about if they could not learn about it.
The Lit Review is an integral part of my STEM 1 Thesis. It provides the reader with background information about the technologies and concepts used in my project. It allows them to summarize the research I did by reading scientific journal articles, so they have the same mindset going to the actual thesis I had when going into my project. My Lit Review went over probabilistic modeling, modeling viruses for economics, modeling exposure risk, creating web apps, and computer learning systems. My STEM project currently does not utilize computer learning systems, but I was planning on using machine learning when writing the Lit Review. Overall, the Lit Review serves as very detailed background on the project and gives the reader a better understanding of the project’s context.
Conducting research and getting background information before attempting a science or engineering project is crucial to its success. Project notes helped me narrow down the topic that I wanted to work on since I could do research online about the viability of some of my ideas. In the beginning, it also helped me find ideas because I read and took notes on journal articles from many fields. Once I finalized my project, I only focused on papers relating to the technologies I would use and the technicalities behind this project. It gave me great insight into building probabilistic models, testing my models, and creating a web app.
